Village conservation areas are common, listed buildings are numerous, and parts of the district fall within the North Wessex Downs National Landscape, where design and materials are looked at especially closely. Rural sites also raise practical planning matters that town jobs do not — drainage where there is no mains sewer, and access onto fast country roads.

Traditional construction needs traditional materials
Cob, flint and timber frame move and breathe. Cement render and gypsum plaster on these walls cause damp and decay. Lime is not a preference here, it is the correct specification.
Thatch
Thatch carries its own fire regulations, its own insurers and its own specialist trades. Any work near a thatched roof is coordinated with a thatcher rather than worked around.
Off-mains drainage
A lot of village property runs on a septic tank or treatment plant. Adding bathrooms can push an existing system past its capacity, which is a building regulations matter and needs designing in from the start.
Travel and timing
The villages are spread out. Days are planned so that travel between jobs is realistic, which is part of why the calendar only shows days he has actually opened.
